I’ve recorded a few videos giving an overview of the VersionInsight capabilities in RAD Studio XE (Delphi XE and C++Builder XE, to be specific).
Part 3 covers VersionInsight’s ability to track when you rename a file in the IDE, and ensure that the version control repository recognises that as a rename, and not a new file. This is important in order to maintain file history before and after a rename.
In Part 2 of my video series on VersionInsight, the version control integration in Delphi XE and C++Builder XE, I show how to open a project from an existing repository. The example I use is hosted on code.google.com, but it applies equally to sourceforge or even a local repository.

I’ve had a few people ask me lately about resources for getting up to speed on Unicode in Delphi. I’ve sent the same set of links a few times, so I thought I should also share them here:
I spent the morning at Forum8’s Design Festival in Tokyo a couple of days ago. Forum8 build Virtual Reality solutions, mostly it seems for construction, automotive and railway design, traffic and emergency simulation. A couple of hundred of their customers were at the event, sharing the solutions they’d built on Forum8’s technology and getting a look at what Forum8 have coming in the new versions.
Why am I telling you all of this? Well, Forum8’s VR engine and application is written in Delphi, and the SDK that their customers and partners can use to customise the VR solutions is also based on Delphi. There were a number of structural and automotive engineers and designers there who’s first exposure to Delphi was by customising Forum8’s system, and it was really cool to hear how enthusiastic they were about it and what else they can do with Delphi in general. I was in Beijing last week, and one of the news items that caught my eye was about an ongoing spat between two Chinese software giants: Tencent and Qihoo 360. They’d started shoving each other, gradually escalating until punches were thrown, and finally the Minister of Industry and Information Technology had to step in. The message was couched in nicer language, but it was basically “I’m watching you two. Don’t make me come over there!” To give you a feel for the players, Qihoo 360 is China’s largest anti-virus vendor, with more than 300 million users. Tencent, on the other hand, is the world’s third largest internet company by market cap, and has over 600 million users of its QQ instant message software.
Yesterday I came out from behind the Great Firewall of China, and what’s one of the first things I see? Seems Google and Facebook are trading slaps as well.
Chinese press are reporting in the last day or so that the government intervention seems to be having the desired affect. Can’t help but wonder if Google and Facebook would respond in the same way.
As has been mentioned a few times during the RAD Studio launch events, we’re releasing the Subversion implementation of the Delphi and C++Builder XE VersionInsight API to open source, both to allow people to extend it, but also to serve as an example on how to implement the API for other version control tools.
There was a discussion on the ADUG list recently about Initialization sections. During the discussion I mentioned a technique for stepping through all the Initialization and Finalization sections in your project.

I’ve been watching two lectures from UC Berkeley’s CS61A course, on MapReduce in general and (in the second lecture) Hadoop specifically. If you’re looking for a good, deep kick-starter on both the concepts and the implementation, I’d recommend them. They’re a little dry (hey, they are university CS lectures), and you’ll need to focus on them as they move relatively quickly, but they reward the concentration with, I think, a really good launching point for playing with Hadoop. The lectures are up on YouTube here and here, but note there is a download link so you can watch them offline.
